Best Chinese Food in Chinatown - Friends

On North Broadway at the end of Chinatown, Los Angeles, is a little gem of a restaurant called Chinese Friends. They have been in business since 1972, in the same location.
Not only is the food special, but the wait staff is the friendliest in Chinatown. One waitress told us she has worked there for 31 years.
We first ate at this restaurant 20 years ago, and recently went back to discover that the food here is excellent.
From the Sweet and Sour soup to the Moo Shu, all are excellent dishes. This was the restaurant I was introduced to Beef with Black Bean Sauce, and it is really wonderful.
I highly recommend if you are in the area, to try this once. You will be hooked!

Echo Park Lake - The Return of a Cafe and Pedal Boats

Today was the opening of the new Cafe in the Boat House at the lake. It is being operated by Square One Dining.
Square One Dining also has a cafe at 4854 Fountain Avenue in Los Angeles.
They use organic, local and small farm produce.
It's definitely nice to have a cafe in the park,
since the remodel has made the park a lovely venue.

Here's a couple of the new Pedal Boats on the lake

Allumette Glows

Last night was our first time at the new Allumette in Echo Park. This was formerly the Allston Yacht Club, same owners, new chef.
The restaurant went through a major remodel and was transformed into a lovely, formal spot. This is the type of restaurant that is perfect for special occasions or an intimate dinner.
The menu consists of small plates that are lovely in their execution and with distinct flavors you may have a hard time finding anywhere else.
Allumette means Matchstick in French.
Lets start with the drink menu, creative and yummy. These are very creative and the ingredients blend together quite well. Drink Menu: http://allumettela.com/drink.html
Chef Miles Thompson has come up with quite a unique menu. They do have a tasting menu that can be coupled with wine, but we opted for individual dishes to get a broader experience.
They do 12 to 15 dishes per night, so the menu does change. The Sashimi was so fresh and delicious, but that was just one of the starters. The Fried Oyster with Kimchi Ranch Dressing, Asian Pear Mignonette and Sea Spinach was delicious, as were the Spicy Blue Prawns with Pork Belly , White Peach and Pickled Wasabi, Garganelli with Burnt Eggplant, Hen of the Woods,Long Pepper and Ricotta Salata. The food menu is available here: http://allumettela.com/food.html
What was once a bold, brightly colored space, has become an elegant intimate dining experience.
I highly recommend you go and experience the flavorful dishes and drinks at this lovely restaurant.

Echo Park Lake's Grand Re-Opening This Saturday

The official grand opening is happening this weekend on Saturday, June 15.
On Saturday the crew will start removing the fence that has encircled the lake during the past year and half of construction. While it will take a few days to have the fence fully removed, there will be a full day of celebration hosted by Mayor-Elect Eric Garcetti, the Department of Rec and Parks and the Bureau of Engineering for the Lake’s reopening ceremonies.  Featured speakers and performers will gather at the corner of Logan Street and Park Avenue just before 10:00 am.

This Week in News about Echo Park Lake

From the L.A. Times: The man who saved the Lotus by stealing them

Years ago, an impetuous, and illegal, act by a Reseda horticulturist preserved the lotus species that would later die out in Echo Park Lake.

From TheEastsiderLA: How Safe Will Echo Park Lake Be After It Opens

With less than two weeks to go before Echo Park Lake reopens to the public, the refilled lake and rebuilt park look pristine behind a chain link fence covered with a green screen. But some residents have expressed concern about safety in and around the park once that fence comes down and the lake reopens, attracting throngs of visitors.

Echo Park Lake will be officially and finally opening to the public on June 15! Although this is about a month later than we expected, the project is on time and under budget at $45 million (originally $85 million).

Echo Park Lake Panorama from 1920

Echo Park Lake 1920

June 1920: Panorama of Echo Park Lake looking north from Temple Street. In the distance is Edendale, where early movie studios were located. Later in the 1920s those studios moved to Hollywood.
This photo was published  in the June 27, 1920, Los Angeles Times.
Edendale is no longer a district in Los Angeles. Today its split up among Echo Park, Los Feliz and Silver Lake. In the photo, Allesandro Avenue, now Glendale Boulevard, is on the left.
This photo was later published in the 1998 Times postcard book, “Times Gone By.”
